Overview

The PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner evening class series will consist of eight modules over six weeks. By completing all of the modules of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the PRINCE2 project management method
Discuss the implications of using and/or implementing PRINCE2
Answer any question about PRINCE2
Prepare for the Foundation examination
Prepare for the Practitioner examination

Prerequisites

Pre course Reading

Delegates will be provided with pre-course reading by email prior to attending the course. This pre-reading provides a mixture of theory, sample questions and application of PRINCE2 to a project. The success on the course will be enhanced by close attention to the pre-reading materials so it is recommended that delegates spend approximately 10 hours working through the pre-reading. Delegates will be presented with the official PRINCE2 manual: ‘Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2’ on the first day of the course.

Additional work will be required during events consisting of consolidation reading, mock examination questions and exercises. This work is an integral part of the course and delegates should expect to spend 2 hours on each of these activities.

All delegates will sit the PRINCE2 Foundation examination on the fourth week of the course. The PRINCE2 Practitioner examination takes place on the sixth week.

Who is this course for?
This course is for people who are unable take time away from the office to attend our five day, classroom based PRINCE2 course. Delegates should ideally have some experience of team leading and basic project management principles prior to attending. PRINCE2 is aimed at individuals and/or businesses that wish to understand how to run projects in a logical and organised way – using an internationally accepted project management method.

Equally, anyone wishing to attain industry-leading project management qualifications should attend these courses

Course Outline.

Kick-off orientation. This module will provide the introduction to the course, instructor and participants.

Module 1: Overview of PRINCE2/Project Start-Up (week one)

This module will review the pre-course work carried out by the candidates and then review the principles, themes and processes of PRINCE2 and the PRINCE2 process model. It will go on to explain the key considerations when starting a project. This module will focus on what to consider when starting a project and the process of initiating a project.

Understand the principles and processes of the PRINCE2 approach
Describe, at a high level, the PRINCE2 project lifecycle
Know the start-up activities and what to include in project brief
Describe the project product description
Consider the organizational needs of a project
Understand the role and value of the business case for a project

Module 2: Project Initiation Part I (week one)

This module will focus on what to consider when initiating a project. It will also review the element of risk and quality in a project and how to plan a communication and change strategy.

Learning objectives:

Know the steps in initiating a project
Understand the element of risk in project management
Describe the risk management procedure
Know how quality supports the PRINCE2 principles
Be familiar with the quality planning steps
Understand how change is managed within a project

Module 3: Project Initiation Part II (week two)

This module will introduce PRINCE2 approach to planning and how plans are created at different levels to reflect at different levels of management (project, stage, team).

Learning objectives:

Know the different levels of plans that can be created
Describe the activities that constitute the PRINCE2 approach to planning
Understand the different steps in project planning

Module 4: Specialist Products Creation (week two)

This module will introduce the activities involved in controlling a stage.

Learning objectives:

Know the PRINCE2 way to monitor and control
Describe managing product delivery process
Know what the project manager is there to do on day-to-day basis
Know how to enable the Project Board to be accountable for the project’s success

Module 5: Progress (week three)

This module will introduce the progress theme and how it relates to monitoring and controlling a project.

Learning objectives:

Understand how to review the ongoing success of a project
Review types of progress controls
Describe how to manage the stage boundary process
Know the Project Board can authorize an exception plan

Module 6: Closing a Project (week three)

This module will present the process of closing a project. It will also provide a final opportunity to prepare to take the Foundation exam.

Learning objectives:

Know the key activities and actions required in closing the project down

Exam week (week four)

During week 4 you will be scheduled to take your first exam, PRINCE2 Foundation. The PRINCE2 Foundation exam consists of:

75 multiple choice questions (5 questions will be trial questions and not marked)
1 hour
Closed-book
Candidates require a minimum of 35 correct answers (50%) to pass.

Please note: You must bring signed photo ID with you on any APMG exam (passport, driving licence, student card) as you will be asked to produce it by the invigilator prior to the exam. You must also be familiar with the APMG Terms and Conditions of Certification which can be found here on the APMG International website.

Please note that candidates must pass the Foundation exam before attempting the Practitioner exam. Following the PRINCE2 Foundation examination you will cover PRINCE2 Practitioner during week 5 followed by the Practitioner examination in week 6.

Module 7: Sample Practitioner Paper EX02 (week five)

This module will check for areas that need additional learning to help prepare participants to pass the Practitioner exam.

Learning objectives:

Know what is areas they need more study on
Be assigned an area of study to work on with another delegate

Module 8: Sample Practitioner Paper EX03 (week five)

This module will provide additional opportunities to check knowledge and readiness to pass the Practitioner Exam.

Learning objectives:

Be able to teach others on an assigned topic
Feel ready to take the Practitioner Exam

Exam week (week six)

During week 6 you will be scheduled to take your second exam, PRINCE2 Practitioner. The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam consists of:

8 questions, each worth 10 marks. Total of 80 marks
‘Objective Test Examination’ format – a style of complex multiple-choice examination.
21/2 hours
You may use your official PRINCE2 manual: ‘Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2’ only
Candidates require a minimum of 44 marks (55%) to pass

In order to sit your examination, please ensure you have the correct identification as described above.

By successfully passing the Practitioner exam, delegates attain ‘Registered Practitioner’ status which is recognition of recency of knowledge, competency in the PRINCE2 methodology and commitment to continuing professional development.
